Campbell ROTC Unit Among Nation’s Top 15 Percent
The Campbell University ROTC Battalion has been
recognized as being in the top 15 percent of the nation’s 271 cadet
commands for the year 2002-2003, according to Major General Alan W.
Thrasher, commander of the U.S. Army Cadet Command at Fort Monroe,
VA.
“This accomplishment demonstrates excellence in the
overall Army ROTC program and the hard work and competence of
Campbell University cadets,” Thrasher said. “It also reflects the
support given to the Army ROTC unit and students by Campbell
University.”
Lt. Col. Ted Campagna, professor of Military Science and
director of the Campbell ROTC program, was proud but not surprised.
“The
bottom line is that the award is based on both quality and quantity, and
we excel in both of these areas,” said Campagna. “We have excellent
cadets and an administration that provides a tremendous amount of
support and encouragement. ROTC is not well-accepted on some campuses, a
trend that dates back to the Vietnam era, but I will tell you that at
Campbell, the faculty, administration, and staff provide a tremendously
positive environment.”
The Campbell Battalion consists of four schools from the
1st Region ROTC located in North Carolina. They are Campbell
University, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Fayetteville
State University, and Methodist College in Fayetteville. The Battalion
has consistently out-performed other units both regionally and
nationally, winning the prestigious MacArthur Award six out of the past
14 years and numerous regional and national competitions.
“The thing that is so significant about our program is
that we develop a lot of good officers,” said Campagna. “If that is an
outcome of the good training that we do and the focus we have, then so
be it. It isn’t a goal for me as the Battalion commander to compete with
other schools but to compete within our own ranks, to be as good as we
can be.”
Established in 1971, Campbell’s Army ROTC has basic
course classes open to all students and an advanced program for those
who are interested in becoming an officer in the U.S. Army, National
Guard, or U.S. Army Reserve.
