Senior Eric Blaesing, of Fuquay-Varina, NC, has accepted a position with Wyeth Pharmaceuticals of Sanford, NC. Blaesing graduates in May with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (BSPS) from Campbell’s Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Blaesing will work as an associate scientist in Analytical Development at Wyeth’s Research Triangle Park (RTP) location. He hopes to return to Campbell in the fall to pursue a Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences. Wyeth Pharmaceuticals provides educational assistance to full-time employees who seek further education.

“This is an excellent example of the quality of Campbell’s BSPS Program,” said Dr. Ronald Maddox, dean of the Campbell University School of Pharmacy, about Blaesing’s position. “Our program works hard to prepare graduates for immediate employment in the rapidly growing pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry.”

Blaesing is proud of the education he has received and feels ready to test the career skills he has developed. “I thought Campbell’s Pharmaceutical Sciences program was excellent,” he said. “It effectively covered every facet of the pharmaceutical industry.”

As a student, Blaesing has served as president of Campbell’s chapter of the International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineering, a professional organization that seeks to bring together professionals in the life sciences as a means of improving the pharmaceutical industry. In November of 2003, Blaesing won the ISPE’s International Student Poster Competition.

This year Blaesing also completed an internship at GlaxoSmithKline in Research Triangle Park, investigating potential drug-drug interactions with GlaxoSmithKline’s new compounds.

Blaesing is the son of Jimmie and Lori Griffin of Fuquay-Varina, NC. He plans to marry Erin McCoy, a senior elementary education major at Campbell, in mid-May.

“The BSPS degree is ideal for prospective students pursuing a first career or for older individuals who are looking for “retraining” to move into a new or more stable career,” Maddox said of the Pharmaceutical Sciences curriculum. “North Carolina has one of the largest concentrations of pharmaceutical/biotechnology industries in the United States that serve as state-of-the-art training sites to Campbell’s students.”

The employment of BSPS graduates is phenomenal, with more than 95 percent of graduates being employed within the first weeks after graduation
