Rapalje Wins Full Scholarship to Medical School
|

Alexander Rapalje |
Campbell University student Alexander Rapalje, of
Fayetteville, comes by his interest in medicine honestly. His father
is a physician assistant and a sister, Hannah, is a nurse. The
medical profession has been a part of his world as long as he can
remember, but notification recently that he’d won a full scholarship
to medical school still came as a big surprise.
“I am pretty excited,” he said. “Free medical
school! No one can complain about that.”
The recipient of the Air Force Health Professions
Scholarship, Rapalje will be required to perform a four-year active
duty military tour upon graduation from the medical school of his
choice and the completion of a residency. The scholarship provides
tuition, books, equipment, and most academic fees, as well as a
monthly stipend over 10 and one-half months of the school year. For
the remaining one and one-half months, the recipient will receive
active duty pay as a second lieutenant.
Scholarship requirements were based on undergraduate
academic performance, community involvement, and leadership skills.
Rapalje plans to attend the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine
in Blacksburg.
A biochemistry major and math minor, Rapalje maintains a
3.5 overall grade point average and is active in extracurricular
activities. He is a member of the Pre-Med Club, the Walker Biology Club,
and the College Republicans. He also serves as a class representative to
the Campbell University Student Government Association and is chairman
of the Conduct Review Board.
Rapalje said he chose Campbell University because of its
small class sizes and personal attention. “It’s just a better
environment for me,” he said.
Rapalje is the son of Jim and Karla Rapalje. His
brother, Jarrod, is a sophomore at Campbell, and his sister, Sarah
Coates, is head cheerleading coach at Campbell. Another sister, Hannah
Rapalje, is a nurse in Atlanta, GA.
Founded in 1887, Campbell University is North Carolina’s
second largest private institution of higher education and the second
largest Baptist university in the world. Located in Buies Creek, NC,
just east of the center of the state, Campbell combines academic
excellence and Christian commitment.
