A team of graduate students representing the
Campbell University Master of Business Administration (MBA) program
took second place recently in the 16th annual Graduate Business
Student Competition held at the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill. The Campbell team competed against other teams from
colleges and universities throughout the state.
Sponsored by the North Carolina Small Business and
Technology Development Center, certified public accounting firm RSM
McGladrey, Inc., and Wachovia Bank, the Graduate Business Student
Competition is designed to give student teams the opportunity to work
with actual client companies and compete with other students for prize
money. Each student team works with a business school liaison at its
college or university. The liaison teaches the course or supervises the
independent study project on behalf of the school, advises the team,
manages any intra-school competitions, and is an invaluable part of the
Graduate Business School Competition.
The Campbell team of Ameet Vyas, of Cary, NC, and Robert
Feltey, Brandon Hughes, and Anthony Losurdo, of Raleigh, NC, took second
place with its plan for assessing, stabilizing, and improving the
financial and organizational condition of Inco, Inc., a competitive
industrial construction company with headquarters in Rocky Mount, NC.
Inco consists of seven divisions employing more than 300 workers.
Among its list of recommendations, the Campbell team
suggested that Inco salvage underutilized equipment and evaluate the
overhead employees to help reinstate financial stability. It also
delivered various sales and marketing solutions to help Inco operate
near full capacity and gradually increase revenue.
“We boast one of the best overall records in the history
of this competition,” said Dr. Shahriar Mostashari, director of the MBA
program and school liaison at Campbell. “The credit goes to our gifted,
talented, and highly competitive graduate student body.”
Since Campbell began competing in 1990, its teams have
taken four first-place awards, four second-place awards, and three
third-place awards, winning unprecedented first- and second-place
victories in the 2000-2001 competition. Campbell has also won three
Honorable Mention recognitions. As the second-place winner in 2004, the
Campbell team took home a cash prize of $2,000.
Founded in 1887, Campbell University is North Carolina’s
second largest private institution of higher education and the second
largest Baptist university in the world. Located in Buies Creek, NC,
just east of the center of the state, Campbell combines academic
excellence and Christian commitment.
