Noted Author Addresses Friends of the School of
Education
Kimberly P. Johnson, of Sanford, NC, a noted
children's author, spoke on "Literacy for Young Children" at the
Friends of the School of Education annual banquet at Campbell
University on Thursday, March 18. Johnson was one of nine authors to
be invited to the White House recently by First Lady Laura Bush.
Johnson has written several children's books including "Paperback
Poetry Part I" and "Tag-Along Fred."
Johnson entertained those at the banquet with an
informative and exciting address utilizing skills gained through her
personal experiences with young children. She has written
extensively in the area of children's literature and authored books
of poetry. Johnson teaches creative writing to elementary students
and, like Laura Bush, is an advocate of children's literacy.
"I want to touch hearts. Everyone needs to have a passion for
their work," Johnson said. "Passion is the part of your soul that compels you
to act, according to Webster's dictionary."
"Passion is the size of your tolerance," Johnson continued.
"It means knowing and believing your children can do everything."
Mrs. Elsa Sears presided at the banquet held in the Pine Burr
Room of Marshbanks Dining Hall on campus. Dr. Karen Nery, dean of the School
of Education, gave the welcome and Dr. Mary Ellen Durham gave the invocation.
Dr. Pauline Calloway introduced the speaker. Campbell University students Tara
Jones and Rebekah Cashwell expressed appreciation for scholarship assistance.
Calloway, Dr. Tina Hancock, Dr. Janet Powell, and Dr. Gary Taylor presented
department updates. Dr. Samuel Engel gave the benediction.
The purpose of the Friends of the Campbell University School
of Education is to provide advice, support, advancement, and assistance in
recruitment for the School of Education.
