Wallace Inauguration Set for April
Dr. Jerry McLain Wallace will be inaugurated
president of Campbell University on Friday, April 2.
Pre-inauguration events involving faculty, students, and the general
public will also be scheduled for the week of March 29-April 1.
Dr. Wallace is only the fourth president to lead
Campbell in its 118-year history. Preceding him in the position are
the founding president, Dr. James Archibald Campbell; his son, Dr.
Leslie Hartwell Campbell; and the current university chancellor, Dr.
Norman Adrian Wiggins.
A native of Rockingham, NC, Dr. Wallace graduated from East
Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree in English and government. He
went on to receive Bachelor of Divinity and Master of Theology degrees from
Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. In addition, he received a master’s
degree in sociology and a Doctor of Education from North Carolina State
University.
Dr. Wallace joined the Campbell faculty in 1970 as an adjunct
professor and served as chairman of the Department of Religion and Philosophy
and Tyner Professor of Religion from 1975-1981. He was named dean of the
university and director of Graduate Studies in 1981and appointed to vice
president for Academic Affairs and provost, where he served from 1984 to 2001.
After stepping away from the provost position, Dr. Wallace
served as a special assistant to President Norman A. Wiggins and as the James
R. Coates Professor of Religion and Society in the Campbell Divinity School.
He was elected president of Campbell University on May 29, 2003.
Highlighting inauguration week activities will be a community
worship service on Wednesday, March 31, at 7 p.m. in Scott Concert Hall of the
Rogers Fine Arts Center. Dr. Michael Cogdill, dean of the Campbell Divinity
School, will deliver the message. A special exhibit of artifacts and
memorabilia chronicling the history of Campbell since its establishment in
1887 will also be open to visitors throughout the week at selected times. The
inauguration of President Wallace is scheduled to take place Friday, April 2,
at 2 p.m. on the Lundy-Fetterman Mall.
Founded in 1887, Campbell University is North Carolina’s
second largest private institution of higher education and the second largest
Baptist university in the world. Located in Buies Creek, NC, just east of the
center of the state, Campbell combines academic excellence and Christian
commitment.
