Nickel Creek to Perform at Campbell University
|

Nickel Creek members Sean Watkins,
Sara
Watkins, and Chris Thile. |
The Grammy-award winning trio Nickel Creek will
appear in concert at Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC, on
Friday, March 26 at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 7 p.m. The outdoor
concert will be held in Saylor Park on the Campbell campus and
tickets are being sold for $15.
The trio includes fiddle player Sara Watkins, guitarist Sean
Watkins, and mandolin player Chris Thile. The band will be supplemented on
stage by a bass player, whose membership changes from tour to tour.
In September 2003, Nickel Creek's second album, This Side,
hit the half-million sales mark, giving the band and Sugar Hill Records their
second gold album. In addition, This Side (August 2002) won the 2003
Grammy for "Best Contemporary Folk Album," a category previously claimed by
artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, and Lucinda
Williams. The young trio has been at the forefront of acoustic music
innovation since their self-titled debut in 2000 (which is approaching
platinum sales). Combined with a busy tour schedule, the band will be in the
studio recording their third album to be released this fall.
The musicians met, not surprisingly, through music, when their
parents took them to hear a weekly bluegrass show at “That Pizza Place” in
Southern California. They have been a band for over 13 years. Individually,
the members of Nickel Creek have performed or recorded with The Dixie Chicks,
Dolly Parton, Bela Fleck, Glen Phillips, and others. Both Thile and Watkins
have released two solo albums each; all members won various instrumental
contests in their teens.
The trio has been praised by critics, including Time
Magazine, which had this to say: “The traditionally flavored pop-folk lyrics
and sparkling acoustic licks performed by guitarist Sean Watkins, his
violinist sister Sara and mandolinist Chris Thile reflect an eclectic mix of
influences that include classical, jazz, and rock. The trio is making
down-home music relevant for a new generation... To hear Nickel Creek is to
hear the vibrant reinvention of a classic form.”
Contemporary singer-songwriter Mindy Smith will open for the
band. Before releasing her debut album, One Moment More, Smith
performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. She has had a video in top
rotation on CMT (Country Music Television), and had the lead-off single on the
acclaimed Dolly Parton tribute album, Just Because I’m a Woman.
