Campbell Trial Team Wins Regional Championship
A team of second-year students from Campbell’s
Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law took home the regional
championship at the American Bar Association’s National Appellate
Advocacy Competition (NAAC) held in Atlanta, GA, March 4-6. The
Campbell team has qualified for the NAAC national finals to be held
in Chicago, IL, April 1-3.
Michelle Prince, of Cary, NC; Ashley Kamphaus, of Athens, GA;
and Jon Carroll, of Charlotte, NC, defeated teams from Georgia State
University, Ave Maria, Houston, Samford, and Drake for a perfect 5-0 record.
The team also won second place in the Best Brief competition, primarily
competing against third-year law students.
Another team of second-year students, Robin Muse, of Plano,
TX; Justin Moyer, of Goldsboro, NC; and Marie Mobley, of Fuquay-Varina, NC,
lost by a narrow margin in close rounds with Mississippi College, Samford, and
Southern Methodist University. Their combined score for oral rounds, however,
was higher than the combined oral score of their opponents.
“These students worked extremely hard and spent countless
hours preparing for the competition,” said Greg Wallace, associate professor
of law. “We congratulate them for a job well-done!”
A total of 33 teams competed in the NAAC regional competition.
From a field of 132 teams from 78 law schools nationwide, the Campbell team
earned a place in the top 16 ranking.
Founded in 1976, the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law has
an enrollment of over 300 students and enjoys a heritage derived from three
distinct traditions--the noble tradition of the legal profession, the
Christian tradition, and the finer traditions of the rural South, such as
friendliness and self-reliance. It seeks to educate lawyers who are
Prepared to serve their communities with legal skills and
ethical and intellectual leadership.
