Campbell Hosts 16 th
Annual Piano Competition
A total of 32 high school students throughout the region vied for
honors at Campbell University’s 16th annual piano competition in
February. The winners received cash prizes of $100 for first place and
$50 for second and third place honors.
Lucie Cizkova, an exchange student from the Czech Republic who
attends Enloe High School in Raleigh, took first place; Audrey Low, of
Chapel Hill, a sophomore who is home schooled, won second place; and
William Andrus, of Raleigh, a senior at Cary High School, took third
place. Nancy Wang, of Chapel Hill, a junior at East Chapel Hill High
School, received Honorable Mention.
The winners performed works by renowned composers Copland, Scarlatti,
Prokofieff, Beethoven, and Liszt. Other composers represented in the
competition were Debussy, Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Brahms, Ravel, and
Gershwin. Judges for the event were members of the Campbell University
piano faculty, including Dr. Richard McKee, Susan McAdoo-Wilburn, and
Betty Wishart.
“We try to make our competition professional, but friendly,” said Dr.
Richard McKee, associate professor of music. “Teachers say that it works
and students have consistently played very well here.”
The annual competition provides the opportunity to build
relationships between Campbell and piano teachers throughout the region,
McKee explained. “It acquaints students and teachers with Campbell
University, and helps them to connect,” he said. “We get students from
the same teachers year after year, which means that teachers like what
we do, and they’re confident that students will have a good experience
at Campbell.”
Founded in 1887, Campbell University is North Carolina’s second
largest private institution of higher education and the second largest
Baptist university in the world. Located in Buies Creek, NC, just east
of the center of the state, Campbell combines academic excellence and
Christian commitment.
