Marine Corps Colonel to Headline Barden
Forum
|

Col. John Sollis |
Retired U.S. Marine Corps Colonel John Sollis, assistant chief of
staff for Marine Corps Community Services at Camp Lejeune, NC, will be
the featured speaker at Campbell University’s annual Barden Forum
lecture, Wednesday, March 17, at 7:30 p.m. in Hartness Lecture Hall of
Campbell’s Science Building.
A career Marine officer, Colonel John B. Sollis earned a commission in
the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. His 29-year career included service as a
field artillery officer in all three active Marine divisions, tours of
duty at the White House and the Pentagon, where he served as a speech
writer for the U.S. Secretary of Defense; service as a military observer
with the United Nations in Lebanon; and commander of a recruit training
battalion at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, SC, and 1st
Battalion, 11th Marines during the Gulf War.
Sollis is a distinguished graduate of the Marine Corps War College and
holds a master’s degree in government from Georgetown University. He
also holds a master’s degree in hospitality management from Cornell
University.
His message will focus on character development, a fitting topic for
the 2004 forum, which is dedicated to the memory of the late North
Carolina Congressman David Henderson, of Wallace, NC. A native of Onslow
County, Henderson presided as a judge in Duplin County and represented
North Carolina’s Third Congressional District as a member of the House
of Representatives. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Cape
Lookout National Seashore and also promoted the expansion of North
Carolina’s military bases.
Sponsored by Campbell University’s Department of Government, History,
and Justice, the Barden Forum honors the memory of the late Graham
Barden Sr., former Congressman from the Third District in North
Carolina. The annual lecture series brings noted experts to campus to
discuss political and humanitarian issues. The Forum was begun in 1991.
