School of Education to Hold Annual Banquet

The Friends of the School of Education at Campbell University will hold their annual banquet on Thursday, March 18 at 6 p.m. in the Pine Burr Room of Marshbanks Dining Hall. Children's writer Kimberly P. Johnson will be the featured speaker.

General Membership in the Friends of the School of Education is $35 and includes admission to the banquet; student membership is $5; student membership with banquet attendance is $10; and lifetime memberships are $1,000. Gifts are accepted and can be made in honor or memory of a loved one.

Johnson attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she majored in Radio, Television, and Motion Pictures. She earned an associate's degree in Early Childhood Education and recently completed the Advanced Poetry Writing Program at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Johnson has written five children's books-"The Adventures of the Itty Bitty Frog," "The Adventures of the Itty Bitty Bunny," "The Adventures of the Itty Bitty Spider and the Itty Bitty Mouse," "Paperback Poetry Part I" and "Tag-Along Fred."

She has been the guest speaker for numerous local and national organizations, including Project Read to Me, Smart Start, National Reading Associations, and Head Start.

Johnson, who was named one of Fayetteville Technical Community College's Outstanding Alumni for 2002-2003, visits schools throughout the United States speaking to adults and children about literacy and writing. She conducts staff development workshops on how to motivate children in the classroom. She also teaches creative writing to elementary and middle school students. She is a member of the International Reading Association, Society of Children's Book Writers, and Children's Book Insider. She currently serves as a board member for the Triangle First Book organization and is a policy council member of the Henly-Roberts Head Start Program.

A native of Shelby, NC, Johnson currently resides in Sanford, NC. She has been a flight attendant for US Airways for 15 years. Her husband, Jeff, serves in the United States Air Force.

The purpose of the Friends of the Campbell School of Education is to provide advice, support, advancement, and assistance in recruitment for the School of Education. The organization has also endowed a scholarship, the Friends of the School of Education Scholarship, designated for graduate students.
