Jonas explores Baptist tradition in new textbook
Dr. Glenn Jonas, Howard Professor of Religion and
chairman of the department of Religion and Philosophy at Campbell University,
has edited a new Baptist history textbook highlighting the diversity of the
Baptist movement in North America. “The Baptist River: Essays on Many
Tributaries of a Diverse Tradition” is published by Mercer University Press.
The new textbook examines the numerous diverse groups
included in the Baptist denomination, including Primitive, Freewill,
Seventh-Day, American, Southern, North American and Independent Baptists.
Contributors include Deborah Van Broekhoven, Doug Weaver, Sandy Martin, Jerry
Faught, William Davidson, John Crowley, Philip Thompson, William Brackney, Don
Sanford, Walter Shurden and Lydia Hoyle.
Mercer University Press calls it “the ideal survey for
undergraduate-level students.”
Dr. Glenn Jonas received a Bachelor of Arts from Mars
Hill College and a Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological
Seminary. He earned a Ph.D. from Baylor University. He is a member of the
American Society of Church History, the American Academy of Religion, the
National Association of Baptist Professors and the Baptist History and Heritage
Society among other organizations. He is the author of “A Critical Evaluation of
Albert Henry Newman, Church Historian” and has coauthored “A Journey of Faith:
Introduction to Christianity.”
