Master guitarist performs for Hispanic Heritage Month
Spanish guitarist Francesc de Paula Soler will perform
Thursday, Oct. 19, at 8 p.m. in Scott Concert Hall at Campbell University’s
Rogers Fine Arts Center. The concert is free and open to the public.
A presentation of Hispanic Heritage Month, Soler is
known as a master guitarist at the Conservatorio Superior de Musica de Barcelona
in Spain and has recorded a CD of guitar selections. He has received numerous
prizes and awards, including the conferring of honorary citizenship in Dallas,
TX, in 1988 and special recognition from the U.S. House of Representatives.
Known as “The Poet of the Guitar,” Soler’s performances
have garnered international acclaim, prompting one “Washington Post” critic to
write, “Soler plays dazzling solos with his left hand on the fingerboard and
unleashes a battery of right-hand percussive effects on the body of the guitar.”
Divided into two parts, Soler’s program will provide a
panoramic view of the presence of classical guitar in Spain and Latin America
and present some of the most representative composers of contemporary music for
the instrument, including Eliseo Grenet of Cuba and Manuel Ponce of Mexico.
