Campbell Divinity School to host Prevatte Lecture Series

     Campbell University’s Divinity School will host its annual Prevatte Biblical Studies Lecture series next month.
     Dr. Richard Hays, the George Washington Ivey Professor of New Testament at Duke Divinity School will deliver a series entitled “Reading Scripture Through the Eyes of the Gospel Writers”. The first lecture will be held Monday, October 23rd at 7:00 pm in Taylor Hall. The second and third lectures will be held on Tuesday, October 24th at 10:40 am and at 1:45 pm. Tuesday services will be held at Memorial Baptist Church, adjacent to campus. The series is open to students and alumni of the Divinity School as well as ministers and interested lay persons in the region.
     Dr. Hays, an ordained United Methodist minister, is renowned for his work on the letters of Paul and on New Testament ethics. The chair of the Biblical Division at Duke Divinity School, he has also chaired the Pauline Epistles Section of the Society of Biblical Literature, as well as the Seminar on New Testament Ethics in the Society for New Testament Studies. His books include The Moral Vision of the New Testament: Community, Cross, New Creation, The Art of Reading Scripture, and The Conversion of the Imagination.
     “Campbell Divinity School is honored to welcome such an outstanding New Testament scholar as Dr. Hays to our school,” said Dr. Michael Cogdill, Dean of the Campbell University Divinity School. “He fulfills the intent of the Prevatte Lectureship, as Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Prevatte valued excellence in the teaching of the Bible, and gave their endowment for this purpose.”
     The Prevatte Biblical Studies Lecture series was endowed by Mr. and Mrs. E.J. “Jimmy” Prevatte of Southport, NC. The lectureship is intended to bring outstanding scholars to the University who are widely recognized for excellence in relating the message of the Bible to the ministry of the church.
     The Campbell Divinity School was founded in 1996 with the mission to provide "Christ-Centered, Bible-Based, and Ministry-Focused" theological education. The School offers five disciplines of study -- the Master of Divinity, the Master of Arts in Christian Education, the Master of Divinity/Master of Business Administration, the Master of Divinity/Master of Arts in Community Counseling and the Doctor of Ministry.
