Campbell grads hear from successful alums
Nothing succeeds like success. That was the motivation behind Campbell
University’s decision to bring back outstanding alumni, Drs. LeAnne Kennedy and
Corey Furman, to address graduates at the winter commencement exercises,
Saturday, December 17.
“We’ve started a tradition that will continue over the
next several years,” said President Jerry M. Wallace, “having Campbell alumni
address our graduates, people who work and serve in a way that is commendable to
us all.”
A total of 655 degrees were conferred and 360 graduates
were on hand to receive degrees at two ceremonies, one at 10 a.m. and another at
2 p.m. Speaking at the morning service was Dr. LeAnne Kennedy, Pharmaceutical
Care coordinator for Hematology and Oncology for inpatients at Wake Forest
University Baptist Medical Center. Kennedy received a Doctor of Pharmacy degree
from Campbell in 1993.
“It wasn’t that long ago that I was sitting in your seats,”
Kennedy told the graduates. “But success doesn’t happen overnight. I encourage
you to find a good mentor, learn who you are and don’t let anyone else define
what your success should be.”
Kennedy, who became a staff pharmacist at Baptist Medical
Center just one year after graduating from Campbell, also stressed giving back
to the community and the university. “Success isn’t just achieved through your
profession,” Kennedy said. “It comes in being able to contribute something to
others, to your university and to those who come after you.”
Dr. Corey Furman, who spoke at 2 p.m., is pharmacist-manager
of a chain of independent retail pharmacies, Boone Drugs Inc., and a 1995
graduate of the School of Pharmacy. He urged students to set their priorities
and be accountable for their own lives.
“Real success comes from glorifying God,” he said. “Read your
Bible every day to stay focused on what God wants you to accomplish. When God is
number one, it trickles down into every single aspect of your life.”
Graduates Artreese Adams and Janelle Munter liked the
fact that alumni were selected to be graduation speakers. “It shows Campbell’s
commitment to its students,” said Munter.”
