“The Campbell Times” earns national honors
NASHVILLE—“The Campbell Times,” Campbell University’s campus newspaper, captured
four awards, including the first-place award for newspaper design, at the
Baptist Press Collegiate Journalism Conference.
In addition to the first place award in front page
design, one staff member received two awards. Courtney Willey, a junior mass
communication major from Rocky Mount, received second place in feature writing
and third place for in-depth news writing. Editor in Chief Melissa Lilley, a
senior mass communication major from Elizabeth City, won second place in the
regular column writing category.
“Few people realize the intensive labor that students
exert in publishing an award-winning weekly newspaper,” noted Michael Ray Smith,
chair of the Department of Mass Communication. He went on to praise adviser Lisa
Farmer for her leadership and Lilley for her ability to motivate and inspire new
reporters and veteran section editors.
More than 100 college students met with mass
communication professionals from across the country in Nashville for the fifth
annual Baptist Press journalism conference held in October. Keynote speakers
included David Leeson, a photojournalist for the Dallas Morning News, Steven K.
Helling of People magazine and Gary Fong of the San Francisco Chronicle.
The Excellence in Journalism competition is designed to
recognize the best Baptist student newspapers and yearbooks in the nation and
the competition included Baptist colleges and universities from across the
nation.
