Giles wins “Seussical” competition
Campbell University student
Mike Giles, of Bowie, Md., won the Art Department’s annual poster design
competition for his original and artistic interpretation of “Seussical,” the
whimsical musical based on the Dr. Seuss books, which will be presented by the
Theatre Arts Department Oct. 21-22 and 27-29. Giles, a junior, has a double
major in Graphic Design and Studio Art.
“I put a lot of effort into this work and therefore am
very proud of it” Giles said. “This year there were a lot of good entries. There
was a lot of hard competition.”
Giles drew his inspiration for his winning work from a
desire to capture the feelings rather than the faces of the play. After an
initial client meeting with Georgia Martin, director of the musical, Giles knew
that bright colors and truffula trees were the way to go.
In addition to the professional publication and
distribution of his creative poster design, Giles also received a $50 restaurant
gift certificate. In the future, Giles would like to work for a design firm as
an art director. “Winning this competition was great, it makes me feel like I’m
in the right place, like I’ve chosen the right major,” said Giles.
This year, both the Graphic Design and typography
classes competed in the “Seussical” competition. All works were exhibited at the
E.P. Sauls Gallery, of the Rogers Fine Arts Center.
“Seussical,” will run Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21-22
and Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 27-29, at 8p.m. in Ellis Theater, of the
Rogers Fine Arts Center. A Saturday matinee for Harnett County students will be
performed on Oct. 22, at 3p.m. For ticket information, call the Campbell
University Theatre Box Office at (910) 893-1509.
