Campbell professors/student to present research for
county's Sesquicentennial
Campbell University
professors Lloyd Johnson, Ronnie Faulkner and Michael Smith and student Courtney
Wiley will present original research Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. in Room 121 of
the Lundy-Fetterman School of Business. The symposium is part of a year-long
Sesquicentennial celebration.
Dr. Michael Smith, chairman of the Mass Communication
Department, will present his research on a Civil War journalist, John McLean
Harrington. Harrington began writing his handwritten newspaper in 1858 at the
age of 19. The newspapers documented local and state news, weather reports,
literary criticisms, politics and prose. Harrington published 277 issues of his
newspapers from 1858-1869. Today, they are considered to be forerunners of
publications such as The Saturday Evening Post. Harrington died in 1887, a few
months before the county’s first printed newspaper was published. In addition,
student Courtney Wiley will present her research on an epic poem by Harrington.
Dr. Lloyd Johnson, director of Historical Studies, will
discuss the Colonial period, and Dr. Ronnie Faulkner, associate professor of
history and director of Library Services at Campbell, will present a history of
the Civil War. Dr. James Martin, chairman of the department of Government,
History and Justice, will moderate.
Campbell University welcomes the community to come and
discover the history and heritage of Harnett County. Refreshments will be served
at the event.
