Campbell alumna travels to Africa on mission trip
Sherry Raynor Worrell, a 1982 Campbell graduate and physical education teacher,
traveled to Nigeria and Zambia for a mission trip in September.
She went to Zambia to minister to children in the
village of Luanga. The people of this village live in grass huts without
electricity. Using her expertise as a teacher, she taught the children many
things, including how to blow up balloons. They managed to play with them in the
bush without popping the balloons.
Worrell also visited the youth at the New Life
Fellowship Church in Kabanana near Luanga. Her students at Floyd L. Knight
School in Sanford made cross necklaces as gifts for the children. The year
before, her class collected various sports equipment and balls to give to the
youth. They also gave the children a parachute with the handprints of the
students on it.
The pastor of New Life Fellowship Church of Olivia,
N.C., Rev. Gail Dickens has started seven churches in Zambia. She was also the
featured speaker at a women’s conference in Nigeria. Worrell is thankful to
Dickens for organizing these trips to Africa.
“Reverends Dickens has opened the door for me with this
special opportunity,” said Worrell. “I also appreciate the support I got from
Campbell when I was a student there. The university always encouraged students
to share their faith.”
In her spare time, Worrell coordinates the Lee County
Special Olympics Spring Games and is the youth director and pianist for the New
Life Fellowship Church.
The churches in Zambia are growing and there is a need
for schools for the children in the villages. For more information, contact: New
