Scholarship endowed in memory of Campbell student
On May 1, 2003, students Jessica Ann Kalinowski, Rebekah Heldreth and Brooke
Hudgens were killed when their automobile hydroplaned into oncoming traffic on
Interstate 20 near Crawfordsville, Ga. The girls had just completed spring
semester at Campbell University. Kalinowski, a junior from Martinsville, Va.,
and Heldreth, a junior from Dry Fork, Va., were set to enter pharmacy school in
the fall.
“I see myself as an ambitious individual, one who would
like to do everything I can to help other people,” Kalinowski wrote in her
application to pharmacy school.
Dr. Ronald Maddox, dean of the School of Pharmacy,
affirms her assessment. “Both girls were outstanding students, so supportive of
the School of Pharmacy and so happy,” Maddox said. “Jessica was involved in the
Pre-Pharmacy Club and was committed to doing what it took to be accepted into
pharmacy school. Her mother was so excited when she learned Jessica had been
accepted.”
Sadly, Jessica did not live to hear the good news, but
her family has perpetuated her legacy of kindness and hard work by endowing a
scholarship in her memory. The Jessica Ann Kalinowski Memorial Pharmacy
Scholarship, which benefits first-year pharmacy students, has already been
awarded to a student from Jessica’s home state, Stephanie Lynn Weiss of Stuart,
Va.
“I was saddened by Jessica’s death, and I know how
difficult it must be for her parents to come back to endow a scholarship in her
honor,” said Maddox, “but it continues to build a bond between her family and
the School of Pharmacy. I’m so pleased that they are willing to support other
students in the pursuit of a pharmacy education.”
