Campbell Divinity Student Releases debut solo album
Campbell University divinity student, David Calvert, is no stranger to hard
work. He is the graduate assistant to Campus Minister Terry Michael Newell,
resident director of Burkot Hall dorm, leads the Campbell University Worship
service (CUW) and the Grace Community Church worship team. If that isn’t enough,
Calvert has played in four bands over the past six years. He has opened for acts
like Audio Adrenaline and Jars of Clay. On Aug. 23, 2005, “The Resistance,”
Calvert’s debut solo album, went on sale.
“Financially, it made sense to pursue this project
now.” Calvert said. “I just had to believe that I could do something by myself.”
The record is certainly a labor of love. The 12 song CD
is a portfolio of Calvert’s work beginning with his sophomore year of college.
With each track, the songwriting becomes more mature and the lyrics are laced
with metaphors.
The first song, “Welcome,” is a reflection of a
conversation about songwriting that took place about ten years ago. The sixth
track is one of the first songs Calvert wrote, revealing sentiments about his
relationship with his father before he entered his freshman year at Campbell.
A couple of songs on the disc are fan favorites from
Calvert’s other projects “Casting Shadows” and “One Less Frame.” While recording
at Cross-Eyed Studios in Fuquay -Varina, he decided to leave those songs in pure
form.
Accompanying him on “The Resistance” is Andrew Tatum on
lead and backup guitar, Melinda Pierce on the cello and Mike McKee on
percussion.
Even though he is still in school, Calvert plans to
send his new album to different record labels and management firms. His ultimate
goal is to work in church ministry. Currently you can find him at soccer games,
playing the drums or playing the video game “Halo” with his residents.
David Calvert will perform selections from his debut
album at the Campbell University Coffee House in the Student Center on Sept. 23,
at 8 p.m. Copies of “The Resistance” are $12 each. To place an order, log on to
