Campbell unites to help victims of Hurricane Katrina
Campbell University
students, faculty and staff will come together in a university-wide fundraising
initiative to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina, according to Campus Minister
Terry-Michael Newell. A challenge has been issued to each of the 45 clubs and
every organization on campus, including residence halls, departments and
divisions to raise a minimum of $250 each by October 22, 2005, the weekend of
Homecoming. The money will be distributed through the North Carolina Baptist
Disaster Relief organization, an agency of the Baptist State Convention of North
Carolina.
“If each organization raises at least $250, that’s
approximately $15, 000,” said Newell. “We want to make sure that every single
person on campus has the opportunity to participate in this effort.”
Already clubs and organizations have mobilized to
collect money, canned goods, cleaning supplies, water and other necessary items
for immediate relief, and donations will be collected at the Lawrence Welk
All-Stars and North Carolina Pops concert at Campbell on Thursday, September 8.
In addition, Campbell’s
Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law has accepted a second-year student from
Loyola University in New Orleans, Caroline Youngblade, who began attending
classes on Monday. The university waived all tuition and fees for fall semester.
Two other law students have also contacted Campbell. The Campbell law faculty
has agreed to give additional time and attention to these students who have
already missed three weeks of classes.
“I believe this will be an ongoing effort for
Campbell,” said Newell. “Once the disaster area is safe, organizations like the
Baptist Student Union will most likely plan mission trips to offer additional
aid.”
