Betty Wallace honored by Campbell School of Pharmacy
The face of Harnett County resident, Betty Wallace, registered both shock and
emotion when it was announced Wednesday that the student commons area in
Campbell University’s new pharmacy teaching facility will be named in her honor.
Mrs. Wallace is the assistant to Dr. Ronald Maddox, dean of the Campbell
University School of Pharmacy.
The commons area is a feature of the 42,000
square-foot, $9.9 million building scheduled to be completed in fall 2006. Dr.
Ed Herring, Jr., (’95) president-elect of the Pharmacy Alumni Association Board
of Directors, made the announcement on behalf of the association, which raised
$250,000 for the naming rights to the student commons area.
“We knew the area needed to be named in honor of
someone who has influenced so many of our lives as students,” Herring said. “As
part of the staff and a friend of many, Mrs. Wallace loves to watch young
students come in the doors of the Campbell University School of Pharmacy, leave
as professionals and start families of their own. She loves to see past students
come back to visit with their children and receive pictures in the mail of
newborns. ‘In a way,’ she says, ‘the pharmacy school is one big family.’”
Mrs. Wallace came to Campbell in 1973 as a member of
the Admissions staff. She later became secretary to the Dean of Men and was
selected to be the assistant to Dean Maddox in 1985, just one year before the
School of Pharmacy was accredited.
“This is just overwhelming,” Mrs. Wallace said. “After 20 years of service to
the School of Pharmacy, I would do it all again.”
Mrs. Wallace’s husband O.B., her son Patrick and his
wife Paige, grandson Luke, youngest son Travis and his wife Cassie were present
for the announcement. The name of the commons area will be the “Betty M. Wallace
Student Commons Area.”
The Campbell University School of Pharmacy was
established in 1986 as the first new school of pharmacy to open in the United
States in 35 years. In 1990, the charter class distinguished itself with a 100
percent passage rate on state and national board examinations. Subsequent
classes have maintained a record of 99 percent passage rate on the national
board exam and 99 percent on state board exams. The School is a member of the
American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. Additional courses are taught at
the School of Pharmacy Department of Clinical Research located on Campbell
University’s RTP campus.
