President of John Locke Foundation to Speak at Campbell

John Hood, president and chairman of the John Locke Foundation, will be the featured speaker at Campbell University’s FREE Forum lecture. Hood, who will deliver another in a series of FREE Forum lectures on Austrian economist F.A. Hayek, will speak Monday, November 15, at 5:30 p.m. in Lynch Auditorium of the Lundy-Fetterman School of Business. Admission is free and open to the public.

One of the most important economic figures of the 20th century, Hayek did much to influence economic and political thought. The author of “The Road to Serfdom,” Hayek is regarded as a key figure in the revival of liberalism, and his ideas were at the forefront of the movement towards a society based on freedom of association and exchange and away from the central control of government. In addition, Hayek was a leading theorist on knowledge and human learning. His work in theoretical psychology represents a landmark in 20th century thinking about learning and cognition because it challenged the traditional models. Hood will discuss the role of Hayek and markets in today’s political arena.

Hood, who also serves as publisher of “Carolina Journal” and oversees the research, publications and administration of the John Locke Foundation, is a syndicated columnist on state politics and public policy for “The Durham Herald-Sun” and more than 30 other newspapers in the state. He is a regular radio commentator and a weekly panelist on “N.C. Spin.” He also hosts “Carolina Journal Radio,” an hour-long news magazine that appears on 16 commercial stations each weekend. His published articles have appeared in “Readers’ Digest,” “The New Republic,” “National Review,” “Policy Review,” “Military History” and “Reason” and in newspapers, including “The Wall Street Journal” and “USA Today.”

He is a graduate of the School of Journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he founded the student magazine, “The Carolina Critic.” The magazine ultimately grew to encompass five campus editions (At UNC-Chapel Hill, N.C. State, UNC-Greensboro, UNC-Charlotte and Wake Forest University).

The FREE Forum is funded through contributions of the Campbell University Adam Smith Club’s patrons and supporters. The Adam Smith Club is a student organization, which promotes the principles of individual liberty and personal responsibility, free enterprise and minimal government.
