Maren Hess named assistant provost for institutional research, assessment & accreditation

BUIES CREEK -- Maren Hess has joined Campbell University as assistant provost for institutional research, assessment and accreditation.

In this position, she’ll be responsible for supporting the president, provost and senior administrators with contextualized information to help direct the university. She’ll also work with unit directors, department chairs, program chairs, faculty and staff across the campus to utilize the university’s known data more effectively, discover what the university would like to know about itself, streamline assessment processes, and provide accreditation support.

“I view the institutional research and assessment office as a service unit to support the university,” Hess said. “I enjoy working with data just as much as having dialogue with my colleagues, and I trust that my colleagues at Campbell will find that I approach issues with a balanced temperament.”

Hess began at Campbell on Jan. 20.

Previously, she was the director of assessment, institutional effectiveness and compliance at Mansfield University in Mansfield, Pa. She earlier held similar positions at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa., and Corning Community College in Corning, N.Y. She also has six years of adjunct faculty experience.

“We are very pleased to have Maren join Campbell University as the new assistant provost,” Campbell Provost Mark L. Hammond said. “She brings with her a wealth of experience in all three facets of the position (institutional research, assessment and accreditation); a brilliant mind for analyzing the data of our complex institution; and a warm and charming persona that fits perfectly with the Campbell culture.

“We are fortunate and happy to welcome her and her family to the Creek.”

Hess earned both her Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences and her Master of Business Administration with a concentration in technology management from the Rochester Institute of Technology. She’s a member of the Association for Institutional Research and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, and is an elected member on the steering committee of the North East Association of Institutional Research.

She lives in Fuquay-Varina with her husband and two sons. Outside of work, she enjoys quilting, reading, hiking and running. In September 2013, she finished the Wineglass Half-Marathon with a time of 1 hour and 53 minutes, which was in the top 15 percent of all racers. She’s training for at least one half-marathon and a triathlon in 2014.
