BUIES CREEK -- Campbell University’s new Doctor of Physical Therapy program received approval this week from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to continue the national accreditation process.
The SACSCOC is the regional body for the accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in the South. It serves as the common denominator of shared values and practices for degree-granting institutions in 11 southeastern states.
“This is exciting news,” said Dr. Greg Dedrick, director of Campbell’s physical therapy program. “Approval from the SACSCOC is a necessary step to submit our application for candidacy to the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).”
Dedrick plans to submit Campbell’s application to CAPTE before June 1. Pending accreditation approval, classes for Campbell’s new DPT degree are projected to begin in January 2014. The program is currently accepting applications with plans to admit 32 to 40 students for the first class.
Graduation from a physical therapist education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), 1111 North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, VA 22314; phone 703-706-3245; email@example.com is necessary for eligibility to sit for the licensure examination, which is required in all states.
Campbell University is seeking accreditation of a new physical therapist education program from CAPTE. The program will submit an Application for Candidacy, which is the formal application required in the pre-accreditation stage. Submission of this document does not assure that the program will be granted Candidate for Accreditation status. Achievement of Candidate for Accreditation status is required prior to implementation of the professional/technical phase of the physical therapy program; therefore, no students may be enrolled in professional or technical courses until Candidate for Accreditation status has been achieved. Further, achievement of Candidate for Accreditation status signifies satisfactory progress toward accreditation, it does not assure that the program will be granted accreditation.
