Buies Creek, N.C.—Dr. David Dennis, assistant professor of education at Campbell University, has been selected to lead the School of Education’s Special Education teacher certification program begun this fall.

A resident of Raleigh, N.C., Dennis received a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1977. He went on to earn a Master of Education from North Carolina Central University in 1984 and a doctorate in Educational Administration from Campbell University in 1993.

An educator since 1977, Dennis has worked in all levels of education and a variety of positions, including principal, assistant principal and teacher. He was named the 2002-2003 Wake County PTA Principal of the Year and North Carolina Principal of the Year by the North Carolina Art Education Association. Dennis also served as Middle School Director for the Principal and Assistant Principals Association for the Wake County Public Schools and participated in the Principal’s Executive Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Institute of Government.

Dennis is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the National Association of Middle School Principals, the National Association of Elementary School Principals, the North Carolina Art Education Association, Phi Delta Kappa, the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development and the National Council of States on In-service Education.

Campbell University’s Special Education teacher certification program is a response to the country’s need for special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. In 2006-2007, 13.6 percent of all public school students in the U.S. required Special Education services.

“We looked at what was best for the School of Education and concluded that there is a much greater need for a Special Education program over any other program,” said Dr. Karen Nery, dean of the School of Education. “Dr. Dennis brings a great deal of expertise and experience in the area of special education, a high level of energy and a wonderful sense of humor.”
