Campbell University recently received thank you's from the North Carolina Baptist Men for raising $8,320 in aid for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. "The money has helped to provide over 800,000 meals from our feeding units in Meridian, Mississippi; Gulfport, Mississippi and Lafayette, Louisiana," said Richard Brunson, director of NC Baptist Men. "It also helped to provide more than 38,000 showers, wash more than 5,600 laundry loads, provide 13,085 family food boxes to families in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, and send more than 50 tractor trailer loads of bottled water and other supplies." According to Campus Minister Terry- Michael Newell, several university- wide fundraising activities helped to raise the total amount of $8,320. They included a performance by the Lawrence Welk All-Stars and the North Carolina Pops Orchestra, bake sales, a car wash, a dunking booth, a clothes drive and others events conducted by campus clubs, dormitories and departments on campus. There was also money contributed from the sale of a CD by Adam Walts, a guest speaker for Campbell University Worship (CUW). "With a tragedy such as Hurricane Katrina, it was imperative that our community should respond too. The effort given and the money raised by our community was just a very small way we could connect to the larger issues brought by this natural disaster," said Newell. In addition, the money that Campbell provided will also be used to fulfill the goal of North Carolina Baptist Men in purchasing building materials to rebuild 600 homes in the Gulfport area. During the upcoming spring break, a group of Campbell students will also work with the North Carolina Baptist Men in rebuilding homes in the Gulfport area.
