Dr. PLATT came to Campbell in 2001. A native of Virginia, he received his B.A. from UNC-Chapel Hill, his M.A. from UNC-Greensboro, and his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland-College Park, following government service. Rorin has also studied at Georgetown University and the University of Virginia.
Dr. Platt has taught at a number of institutions, including Peace College (Raleigh), Meredith College (Raleigh), the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, UNC-Greensboro, St. Stephen’s (Alexandria, VA), McCallie (Chattanooga, TN), Woodberry Forest (VA), and St. Timothy’s-Hale (Raleigh), where he served as Headmaster.
A diplomatic historian who specializes in American intelligence history, Rorin has authored two books and a number of articles and book reviews, including Virginia in Foreign Affairs, 1933-1941 (1991). Dr. Platt is presently working on a study of Virginians who served in America’s WWII intelligence services. He served as Book Review Editor for American Diplomacy, the on-line journal based at UNC-Chapel Hill from 1999-2006. Dr. Platt has served on the Board of Directors of American Diplomacy Publishers since 2000. In 2007, he was named to the editorial board of Brill Publishing's book series, "History of International Relations, Diplomacy, and Intelligence."
Platt has served as a faculty consultant for the College Board in both AP European and American history since 1992. He has also served in a number of extracurricular capacities at previous institutions and -- since arriving at Buies Creek -- has assisted with our Phi Alpha Theta chapter, Luncheon Learn, and the George C. Marshall Undergraduate Scholar's program, which he inaugurated at Campbell in 2002.
A member of numerous community, national, and professional history organizations, including the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations, the SPCA, and the English-Speaking Union, Rorin remains an active tennis (and occasional squash) player and attends St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Raleigh.
