Education:
BA, Biology (honors) and General Science (honors), Hiram College, Hiram, OH, 1985 - cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa Society, Alpha Lambda Delta Society.
Ph.D., Biology, University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC, 1985-1990. Emphasis in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Development. Dissertation research included studying the regulation of translation in mouse muscle cells.
Postdoctoral fellow, Human Genome Center at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, NM, 1990-1992. Served as molecular biologist on a multidisciplinary team of scientists to develop new methods and technology in DNA sequencing. Research efforts included development of fluorescent nucleotides and their enzymatic incorporation into and removal from DNA molecules. Also served as postdoctoral liaison under Cooperative Research and Development Agreement #0001 (CRADA #0001) between Los Alamos National Laboratory and Life Technologies, Inc. (GIBCO/BRL) in an effort to expedite technology transfer between national laboratories and biotechnology companies in the US.
