Professional Certifications

The curriculum in the Kinesiology Major and the Fitness/Wellness Management Major should prepare the student adequately to take either of these certification exams, and it is recommended that all graduates in these two degree areas take one of these certification examinations. If the student is preparing for a career working with the adult population for health purposes, the ACSM's Health/Fitness Certification is preferred. If the student is preparing for a career working with athletes as a coach or strength and conditioning professional, the NSCA's Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist is preferred. A new certification exam to certify Exercise Physiologists has just been developed in the Spring of 2000. It was developed by the American Society of Exercise Physiologists. This certification is long overdue and will give definate meaning to the professional designation, "Exercise Physiologist". Career areas that designated "Exercise Physiologist" will be more specifically defined to alleviate the current situation where anyone with an interest in exercise or sports could market themself as an exercise physiologist.

This certification is highly respected for occupations in Corporate Wellness, Personal Training, Adult and Elderly Fitness, Athletic/Health Club Professional, and Health Promotion areas.

  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist- National Strength and Conditioning Association
  • This certification is highly respected for occupations in Personal Training of the Body Builders, Power Lifters and Athletes, Strength and Conditioning coaches for athletic teams, and Adult fitness.
