This major prepares a student for a career in the business of exercise and fitness. A number of courses are taken in the business department, as well as the exercise science curriculum. The Health/Fitness Certification of the American College of Sports Medicine is recommended for the graduates of this program.
This major contains most of the exercise science courses of the Fitness and Wellness Management curriculum, but instead of the business, and accounting courses it includes physics and chemistry. This major is designed for the exercise science student who desires to go to graduate school in one of the exercise science areas, i.e. exercise physiology, biomechanics.
Professional Certifications
The curriculum in the Kinesiology Major and the Fitness/Wellness Management
Major should prepare the student adequately to take either of these certification exams,
and it is recommended that all graduates in these two degree areas take one of these
certification examinations. If the student is preparing for a career working with the adult population for health
purposes, the ACSM's Health/Fitness Certification is preferred. If the student is preparing for
a career working with athletes as a coach or strength and conditioning professional, the NSCA's
Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist is preferred. A new certification exam to certify Exercise
Physiologists has just been developed in the Spring of 2000. It was developed by the American Society of Exercise
Physiologists. This certification is long overdue and will give definate
meaning to the professional designation, "Exercise Physiologist". Career areas that designated "Exercise
Physiologist" will be more specifically defined to alleviate the current situation where anyone with an interest in
exercise or sports could market themself as an exercise physiologist.
