Psi Chi

The National Honor Society in Psychology

The psychology department at Campbell University’s main campus has been granted a Psi Chi charter membership (why not extended campus students—see below*). Psi Chi was founded in 1929 for the purpose of promoting excellence in scholarship and advancing the science of psychology.  Membership is open to graduate and undergraduate students who are making the study of psychology one of their major interests and meet the academic standards listed below:

Becoming a member:

Both undergraduates and graduate students who have registered for major or minor standing in psychology or for a program psychological in nature may be eligible for membership if other requirements are fulfilled.

Ø      Completion of 3 semesters of college course work

Ø      Completion of 9 semester hours (14 quarter) of psychology courses

Ø      Ranking in the top 35% of their class in general scholarship

Ø      Minimum GPA of 3.0 (4.0 scale) in both psychology classes and in cumulative grades

Ø      High standards of personal behavior

Ø      Two-thirds affirmative vote of those present at a regular meeting of the chapter

Students are elected to membership by the Campbell chapter, according to the provisions in the national Psi Chi Constititution.  Eligible psychology majors at Campbell will be notified by letter at the beginning of each fall semester.  A one-time $35 national registration fee is required upon initiation to the honor society.

For more information, contact the Psi Chi faculty advisor at Campbell, Dr.Trey Asbury, or the National Organization Website; www.psichi.org.

*Extended Campus students:

The charter granted to Campbell by the National Psi Chi organization applies only to the main campus location in Buies Creek.  In order to establish a chapter at extended campus locations such as Fort Bragg or Camp Lejeune,  the National organization requires that each campus have an established Psychology Club (8 member minimum) for a period no less than one year.  The frequent movement of students at extended campuses make this requirement a difficult barrier to overcome.

While separate honor societies in psychology are being established at the extended campus locations, they will not be affiliated with the Psi Chi National charter.  Students registered at Ft.Bragg and Camp Lejeune meeting the same criterion as Psi Chi membership, will be notified by mail prior to Fall I term each year.  All students inducted in the honor society will be expected to engage in similar activities as those on the main campus (e.g. academic presentations, community service).
