Family and Consumer Sciences - Department History

1949 "Tea Time"

1983 Food Science Lab, Mrs. Tuck

The Family and Consumer Science Department was originally known as the Home Economics Department when it offered its first major program in 1964. The first majors graduated from the Department in 1966.  The Department offered five concentrations:  Home Economics Education, Clothing-Textiles-Fashion Merchandising, Home Furnishing Merchandising, Food Service Management and General Home Economics.

During the 1993-1994 academic year, the Department undertook a self-study, followed by an external review of the program.  At this time the Department changed its name to the Family and Consumer Sciences Department, consistent with the national trend in Home Economics.  Three majors were offered including Family Studies, Apparel Merchandising, and Food Service Management.  The Apparel Merchandising and Food Service Management have since been dropped from the program.

Currently, our program offers a major in Family Studies with concentrations in Family, Child Development, and Family and Consumer Sciences Education for both middle and secondary schools.
