Faculty members awarded grant for cutting-edge research equipment

Daniel Shin, PhD, professor of pharmaceutical sciences, and Sarah Lui, PhD, assistant professor of pharmaceutical sciences, were recently awarded a $58,880 grant from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center.

Funds from the grant will purchase an ultra-high performance liquid chromatograph (UHPLC) instrument, used to identify and quantify individual components in complex material. Installing the equipment on-campus will give students access to advanced technology that is currently used in the pharmaceutical industry.

Vice President Maddox appointed to NC Institute of Medicine Board

Ronald Maddox, PharmD, vice president of health programs at Campbell University, has been appointed to serve on the North Carolina Institute of Medicine's board of directors.

Maddox will join 17 other board members from leading companies in government, higher education, business and health care. Board members help guide the direction of the Institute, whose two-fold mission is to improve the delivery of health care throughout the state and serve as an advisory arm for the governor, general assembly, and state government in regard to the health care of citizens in North Carolina.

Hall receives national research award

Julie Hall, PhD, assistant professor of pharmaceutical sciences, recently received the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy’s New Investigator Award. The award provides $10,000 as start-up funding for new pharmacy faculty’s research programs.

This year, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) received nearly 150 submissions for the award. On average, 12 to 18 grants are awarded annually in eight different academic areas.  Hall received the award for the biological sciences category in which 43 applications were received.

Shelton installed as president of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists

In her free time Penny Shelton, PharmD, CGP, FASCP, incoming president of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP), likes to go kayaking. Although Shelton admitsthat she has little time to get on the water, starting inNovember 2011 she will have even less time: That is when Shelton will take over the presidency of ASCP. “I hope to lead by example,” she says. “I see myself as a roll-up-the-sleeves kind of leader.

The woman at the top of her pharmacy profession originally didn’t intend to go to pharmacy school. Good at math, biology, and chemistry, she wanted to become an engineer. But, after the school’s orientation, she knew that engineering wasn’t for her.

Tseng named founding chair of new public health program

Tina Tseng, MSPH, PhD, has been named founding chair of the new Department of Public Health at Campbell University’s College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences (CPHS).

Tseng has served at the College the past two years as an associate professor of clinical research. During this time, she has been an integral part of the department promoting student driven research and advising students with their research projects.
