Campbell University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences (CPHS) is dedicated to enhancing diversity in the fields of pharmacy and other health sciences. To address the needs of citizens in different geographical locations and ethnic groups, the College developed the Healthcare Professionals Readiness & Enrichment Program (H-PREP). 

The leading initiative of H-PREP is the Summer Capstone program, a four-day training program at CPHS offered May 17-21, 2012. The Summer Capstone is designed to prepare underrepresented or financially disadvantaged students who are highly qualified in the field of health sciences for admission into CPHS. The curriculum provides excellent educational opportunities for students interested in potential careers in pharmacy and health care industries.

The main focus of H-PREP is to educate individuals on career options, interviewing and application skills as well as overall professionalism and career goals.

Components

H-PREP prepares students for the rigorous CPHS admissions process by offering the following:

  • Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT) and Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) preparation
  • Exposure to professionals in various fields of pharmacy and health sciences
  • Professional development, learning styles, goal setting, cultural competency, interviewing and competitive applicant seminars
  • Mentoring opportunities with CPHS faculty, staff and students

Requirements

Students must meet the following application requirements:

  • Complete online application
  • 1 letter of recommendation from an advisor
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • 30 semester hours of college level courses
  • The following college level courses are required:
    • Calculus (4 credit hours) - Not required for students interested in pursuing a career in Physician Assistant Practice.
    • Biological Sciences (8 credit hours)
    • General Chemistry (8 credit hours)
    • Organic Chemistry (4 credit hours)

Fees

Candidates selected to participate will be required to pay a $100 fee to attend the Summer Capstone. This fee will help cover:

  • PCAT/GRE review course
  • Educational materials and books
  • Instructional fees
  • Meals
  • Housing

Scholarship

Students selected to participate will have the opportunity to apply for various scholarships that will help cover the registration fee.  More information on scholarships will be sent to students after they have been accepted into the Summer Capstone Program.

Instruction

  • Students will participate in a short course designed to enhance verbal and quantitative ability, reading comprehension, writing skills and test taking strategies.
  • Students will be able to assess knowledge by taking pre-test, practice tests, and post-tests
  • Students will receive study materials, and software that will provide practice questions with full-length answers, and diagnostic testing to determine testing skills

Recruitment

  • The Summer Capstone will accept approximately 60 students
  • Undergraduate or post-graduate students who are underrepresented or financially disadvantaged and are highly-qualified in a health science field are selected to participate.
  • Preference is granted to North Carolina residents
  • Instructors and academic advisors are encouraged to recommend top students who meet H-PREP requirements and recommended prerequisites
  • Well-rounded students who:
    • Are involved in their community
    • Have volunteer experience
    • Participate in extra-curricular activities
    • Have some experience in pharmacy or other healthcare professions and/or settings
