Mass Communication - Faculty

Every faculty member in the department has professional experience in his or her field. In other words, they have made their living in the mass media. They know what it is like to work at a newspaper or magazine, a television or radio station, or a public relations or advertising agency. They can use that first-hand knowledge of the industry to teach you the skills you need.

Every mass communication major is assigned an adviser who works with the major throughout his/her college career.  Classes are small, giving the student the opportunity to work one- on-one with the instructor who exemplifies the caring, concerned nature of the faculty.

Professional education is essential to success: Mass communication is a very competitive field. When you graduate, your employer will want to know if you can do the job and to do it better than anyone else. If you are willing to work hard, we can teach you how to do the job and give you the skills you need to succeed.

We offer courses in all areas of mass communication, including: broadcast news journalism, computer graphic design, photography, newspaper and magazine journalism, radio and television production, film production, advertising campaign design, public relations campaigns, publication design, multimedia production, sports journalism, even sports broadcasting opportunities to work with professionals adjuncts: Mass Communication at Campbell uses a number of professionals to teach courses in special areas. For example, a television reporter helps our students develop and refine skills in gathering, writing and reporting news.

Prof. Michael Ray Smith, right, recently appeared on a panel to discuss journalism ethics. He said the controversy about CBS news over discredited memos amounted to a network food fight. He said evening newscasts are under siege and losing viewers. Speaking at a journalism conference in Nashville, Smith called for a return to old-school methods of reporting, checking facts and avoiding the use of reporters that are too close to the story. Campbell was one of several universities nationwide to participate in the conference.
