Campbell University Model United Nations(CUMUN) attended the national Model United Nations(NMUN) conference held 10-14 April 2001 in New York City.  The conference simulated the activities of the United Nation(UN), and was attended by over 2,400 delegates from approximately 200 schools from the US and around the world.  The NMUN bills itself as the largest intercollegiate event in the world.  Campbell University’s delegation of fourteen students represented the country of Burkina Faso, and took part in the deliberation of 8 committees.  The trip was culmination of preparations and fundraising begun in Fall semester 2000.  Especially valuable from an educational standpoint was the tour of the UN headquarters in Manhattan, during which delegates were informed of the purposes, structure and operations of the world’s largest and most important international organization.  Regarding the conference itself, delegates simulated the work of the UN Security Council, General Assembly, Economic and Social Council(ECOSOC), specialized agencies (such as the World Trade Organization) and non-governmental organizations according to the rules and procedures of the UN.  Resolutions passed in committee were presented to their parent bodies for debate and voting on the final day of the simulation, which was held at the UN building using the actual facilities and procedures employed by the respective nations represented.  Closing ceremonies were held in the vast UN General Assembly Hall, providing an appropriate setting for the conclusion for an intensive and fulfilling simulation.  The CUMUN is sponsored primarily by the Department of Government, History and Justice, along with the College of Arts and Sciences.  Generous monetary contributions were also made by Mr. Alan Huggins of the Campbell University International Student office (which also provided transportation to and from RDU airport), the Student Government Association of Campbell University , and GlaxoSmithKline of Research Triangle Park, all of which helped to defray the considerable personal expenses of the students while in Manhattan.  Although demanding of time and energy of participants the 2001 NMUN was a rewarding intellectual and educational experience, and the CUMUN already looks forward to next year’s conference.
