Michael Ray Smith

Roads Scholar, North Carolina Humanities Council.  Discusses media ecology and the unusual work by John McLean Harrington, a writer of handwritten, Civil War newspapers. Smith lectures from his fifth book, A Free press, Free hand: A Free Press in Freehand: The Spirit of American Blogging in the Handwritten Newspapers of John McLean Harrington 1858-1869,

Working on a textbook to help writers work across platforms integrating digital audio, video and photographs with print stories.

He’s also involved with:

· Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication’s Small Program Interest Group; editorial board of SPIG’s peer-reviewed journal.

· Research chair for the mid-winter meeting for Religion and Media Interest Group, Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

· Reviewer for Mass Communication and Society (a peer-review scholarly journal).
