Communication Studies

The mission of the Department of Communication Studies at Campbell University is to impart knowledge and understanding of the human communication process, preparing students for communication careers (including, but not limited to, broadcasting, electronic and print media, corporate communication, public relations, and advertising).

Why Should I Study Communication Studies?

  1. Communication Studies focuses on how people use messages to generate meanings within and across various contexts, cultures, channels and media. The field promotes the effective and ethical practice of human communication.
  2. Communication proficiency is learned. Most are born with the physical ability to talk, but we must learn to speak well and communicate effectively.
  3. The Wall Street Journal reports that employers ranked communication abilities first among desirable personal qualities of future employees (Work Week, 1998). Among the abilities are problem-solving, ability to work in groups, and the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. In an era of increasing talk, it’s wiser talk we need most.
  4. Researchers estimate that 75 percent of a person’s day is spent communicating; therefore, communication proficiency will help anyone better attain personal, academic, and professional success.
  5. There is a broad spectrum of positions and career tracks available to the Communication Studies graduate.
