Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry and Physics seeks to graduate chemistry and biochemistry* majors that are well qualified to enter a chemistry or biochemistry related vocation, graduate school, or professional school.

Why Should I Study Chemistry?

  1. Small class and laboratory size. Class size is around 70 students in the first years and near 10 in the senior year. Lab sections have 20 students or less.
  2. Professors are available. Professors have an open door policy and are always eager to help students.
  3. Courses are rigorous. Students will be prepared for life after college.

Ways we help you achieve success

  1. Professional schools, such as medical, pharmacy, physician assistant, optometry, and veterinarian, lead to highly rewarding careers.
  2. Graduate schools in the Chemistry and Biochemistry fields lead to highly rewarding careers.
  3. Jobs as chemists or biochemists in industrial settings. Consider how chemistry or biochemistry touches almost every aspect of a person’s life – from polymers that make tires safer and last longer to enzymes that make detergents more effective. By the time a new medicine get to market it has been discovered, synthesized, purified, and analyzed by dozens of chemists and biochemists.
  4. Jobs as chemists or biochemists in government settings. Many governmental regulatory agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), Center for Disease Control (CDC), and National Science Foundation (NSF), hire chemists or biochemists to work as lab analysts or researchers, or to develop new environmental or safety programs.
